About our Kindy Room

In our Kindy room the children are becoming a little bit more independent and start developing more and more self-help skills. The children become more confident in going to the toilet by themselves, washing and drying hands, dressing themselves, getting their own lunches and drinks, packing up, using manners and asking for things, applying sun cream, ensuring their hat is on for outside play and hanging artwork up to dry and so on.

The children also start to learn about taking care of themselves/health and hygiene. The staff teach the children all about healthy eating, which is implemented within the centre, as well as dental and hygiene practices.

Staff also cater for and encourage the children’s social and emotional skills. The children learn to share, take turns, using words, speaking confidently, respecting others, and developing friendships. This is done through group play, group activities, meal times, group times etc.

Children also need to feel safe in their environment to develop skills to their full potential. The staff ensure the Kindy room has a welcoming, happy, relaxed and fun environment. All children are treated equally, and all staff spend quality time getting to know each child, and working with each child through the stages of development. The Kindy staff aim for all children to develop a high self esteem, confidence and self-worth.

Cognitive Development in the Kindy room is very important. The children learn so much within this time. The children start to learn more about themselves; their full name, age, mum and dad’s name, hair and eye colour and body parts.

The children also start to learn about the world around us. This may be about different cultures, animals, different types of animals, the solar system, and many more topics. This ties in with different activities within the Kindy program and Group Times.

The Children also learn the alphabet, recognising letters, Counting and recognising numbers (1–15), shapes, colours, days of the week etc.

The children are given a range of fine-motor activities including lots of art and craft. This will also help develop children’s imagination, creative development, colour awareness, self expression, and awareness and experimentation of different textures. This can be done by painting, drawing, pasting, threading different sized objects, smaller piece puzzles, using scissors and the correct scissor grip, and building with small items. In the Kindy room, the children also start to do pre-writing activities such as tracing letters, numbers or their names. Depending on each child’s development, children may go on to tracing other words or writing their own name.

Children also have the opportunity to develop their gross motor skills. This is done by doing lots of play dough play; kneading, rolling, squashing play dough, hammering, and lots of building with large blocks. The Kindy children also love to ride the bikes, and can challenge themselves by riding bikes on different surfaces such as the cement or grass.

Kindy children usually start to become a little bit more confident in experimenting with their own physical development. Larger obstacle courses are set up for the children to challenge their climbing and balancing abilities and co-ordination, children are able to understand small games such as ball games, running races and learning to hop and so on.
